Maintaining Your Home Plumbing

Home plumbing is an important facet of your home. Your home plumbing obviously consists of all your sinks, bath tub, shower stalls and washing machine outlets as well an incoming water line and outgoing sewer line. Here are some tips on maintaining your home plumbing.

While it is easy to view and inspect your home plumbing whether it being your sinks or bath tubs, it can sometimes be difficult to inspect the pipes that connect to your home via the underground municipal water line. Most exterior pipes are made out of galvanized steel which usually lasts for decades with relatively little issues. If you find that there are always puddles of water on your lawn, by your sidewalk, street or drive way, this can be a sign that there might be a leak. Most of the time, you will need to contact your municipalities water department for them to come inspect the pipes. If you have a leak on your land, you municipality will either do the work or you can hire a plumber that will probably need certain permits.

The only thing worse than an incoming pipeline leak is a sewer leakage either going out to the municipalities sewer system or to your septic tank. You will need to contact someone immediately to correct the problem as it can be very messy along with foul smelling.

Indoors, check your pipes regularly. If you notice rot, talk to your plumber about replacing your older pipes. Nowadays, indoor plumbing usually consists of PVC plastic piping so they are much easier to replace and last much longer than older metal piping.

Find the Right Plumber

If you have moved to a new neighbourhood or realize that you need a professional plumber, here are some tips on finding a plumber that is knowledgeable, hard working and won’t scam you.

When it comes to hiring contractors, most home owners can be on the defensive. Many contractors that are employed sometimes do shoddy work, overcharge you and leave a messy work area once the work is completed. If you have just moved into a new area or need a plumber finding a good plumber can save you lots of time and money.

Don’t always go with the cheapest plumber. While price is important, saving a few dollars can cost you in the long run with shoddy or inexperienced workmanship and poor materials. Talk to a few plumbers to see who can complete the job to your satisfaction. Make sure everything is written out, including the price, warranty and parts included. The more you have everything written down, the better you will be able to defend yourself if things go wrong.

Talk to your neighbours or go to your home improvement centre to find contractors that are licensed, bonded and experienced. A recommendation from a neighbour can be one of the best ways to find a good plumber. So follow the above tips to find the right plumber.

Do It Yourself Plumbing

If you are moderately handy, you can easily do a few plumbing tasks around the house. Plumbing is not that difficult as long as you don’t have to break open walls or replace pipes. If you are looking for a few ways to take on plumbing tasks around the house, here are some tips.

One of the many jobs that you can take on is replacing your existing faucets. Many people like to remodel their kitchen or bathroom and you can easily remove your existing faucet and add a new faucet in only a couple of hours. Most faucets are extremely easy to remove and newer faucets come with great instructions and packaged in only a few pieces so you can easily fit everything together and install it. You can also find great help and tips at your home improvement centre.

If you have a leaky faucet or an overflowing toilet, you can also tackle these jobs. Many times an overflowing toilet is a result of a backed up pipe. You can buy a plunger, use a chemical compound to breakdown the blockage or buy a plumbing snake. Plungers are extremely easy to use and cost less than $10. They use suction and usually release minor blockages. For mild to moderate blockages, use a chemical compound such as Liquid Plumber or Drain-O. They dissolve the materials that cause blockages so the water can flow easier. For moderate to tough blockages a plumbing snake is necessary.

Plumbing snakes look like coiled wire that is inserted into a pipe which you manually try to break through the blockage with. Be careful with a snake, you don’t want to break the pipe with too much force.

For leaky faucets, check the sink filter or pipe threading, sometimes you just need to rethread the pipe joints. You can use Teflon tape or even some thread for sewing.
