You have probably heard it all before, but still a vast amount of small home business owners fail to keep adequate records.

Whether due to disorganization, working with the wrong organizational tools or that we are just plain lazy, it is important to keep detailed records of your small home based business in order to report your taxes and analyze your businesses health. Here are a few quick tips to keeping adequate business records.

Practically every business has a computer, use your computer to take down relevant information such as inventory, orders that were received and monetary transactions. Just these few kinds of records can help you control your business more effectively and help you with taxes at the end of the year.

Always save receipts in regards to your business. If you use the postal service to mail products save shipping receipts, save your receipts for inventory purchased and sales receipts for items that are sold.

Download records from online payment services, if you do business over the internet you can easily download all your records because thankfully, online payment services must keep excellent records. So if you have a small home based business don’t forget to keep great records.
