This tutorial was provided by the free training site Courses Online

Using the Windows Explorer

When you start Explorer, you see a window resembling the one shown below. The left side of the Explorer window is called the Folders window, and it displays everything on your desktop, including all of the folders and drives on your computer. The right side of the Explorer window is called the Contents window. It displays the contents of the folder or drive selected in the Folders window. Using Explorer, you can view everything on your desktop, including local and network drives, in a hierarchical fashion. For example, the highest level shown is the Desktop. The second level contains My Computer, My Network Places, and Recycle Bin. The third level contains drives A:, and C:, [any other drives you might have on your PC/workstation]:, as well as Shared Documents and the Control Panel.

The Explorer Window

Expanding and Collapsing Levels

Folders are used to organize your program and document files. Explorer allows you to see the files and programs that your folders contain and gives you the tools you need to effectively view and manage them.

Some folders and devices that you see in the Explorer Window have a "+" located to the left of their icon. This means that the device or folder has levels below it. Clicking the "+" expands the device or folder and reveals lower levels. For example, clicking the "+" next to the hard drive icon reveals the folders on the hard disk.

Once a level is expanded, you will see a "-" next to the icon. Clicking the "-" collapses or hides the levels underneath.

Expanding a Level

To expand and collapse levels in Explorer:

  • Click the "+" next to the icon to expand the level.
or
  • Click the "-" next to the icon to collapse the level.
